Looking after Winter skin

Here at Herbfarmacy we love Winter! Cosy jumpers, sipping mulled wine, beautiful frosty walks, comforting soups, and log fires. But with this comes cold winds, long dark nights, and the central heating which in turn can play havoc on our skin. In this blog, we will be looking at tips and tricks that will help protect our skin and the Herbfarmacy’s products that will help.

How to keep your skin hydrated and moisturised in the winter months?

As the weather becomes drier so does your skin and so it is important to keep your skin hydrated and moisturise to avoid this. Dry skin can lead to a whole host of other skin problems such as tightness, rough, itchy skin, and flaking and peeling, to name but a few!

Hydrating and moisturising are key in helping your skin during colder months. Hydration increases the water content to cells and moisturising helps to prevent this water from being lost through evaporation in the

Hydration helps skin look fresh and bright by keeping the cells plump. Products that will hydrate skin are essential to any good routine and especially during the winter months.

  1. Chamomile Cleanser – this cleanser contains Chamomile which is a soothing herb that improves blood circulation in skin tissue and Calendula that is a fantastic healer for irritated skin. This cleanser is naturally hydrating to keep skin moisturised and avoid dryness and irritation.

  2. Apricot Polish – a gentle face polish to gently remove dead and dry surface skin cells. Revealing fresh, brighter looking skin underneath.

Once hydrated you will need to moisturise which will help to repair the skins protective barrier. Our Herbfarmacy top picks are:

  1. Replenishing Face Cream – this popular face cream softens and smooths the driest of skins. With Marshmallow root to lock in moisture, Macadamia seed oil to moisturises and Rosehip Oil to help improve skin tone and texture this is perfect for dry skin.

  2.  Rose & Mallow Facial Oil is an ultra-nourishing facial oil providing intense and long-lasting moisturise. Packed with vitamins, this product contains Rosehip Oil which is a great addition to any skincare routine. It helps to rejuvenate tired, dry patches, leaving your skin fresh-faced and soft to touch. With added Jojoba seed oil, a great all-rounder, for all skin type and sensitivity. It provides long-lasting moisturise and leaves skin feeling smooth.

  3. Mallow Beauty Balm – the perfect facial moisturising balm for all skin types! Containing shea butter which is great at nourishing skin this balm will moisture your skin without making leaving it greasy, revealing glowing skin.

What about oily skin?

You make think with oily skin your skin won’t dry out in the Winter months but unfortunately this is not the case. Oily skin can potentially go into overdrive as it thinks it’s being dried out and therefore more likely to compensate by producing extra sebum and oil. Whilst your skin is less likely to be irritated than dry skin, oily skin can lead to clogged pores, blackheads and an increased breakout of acne. So, it is still important to hydrate and moisturise oily skin to help prevent your skin from overproducing oils.

Herbfarmacy’s products we would suggest you use are:

  1. Rose & Echinacea Toner – this naturally cooling rose water toner gives the skin a revitalising hydrating boost. Giving pores a deep clean will help to keep acne at bay and leave skin feeling fresh and revived!

  2. Calming Face Cream – This face cream has been formulated for combination and oily skin. With Safflower oil that works along the t-zone to purify skin and prevent excess oil from blocking the pores – while Marshmallow helps to locks in moisture in other areas to hydrate dry and flaky patches.

Don’t forget about the rest of your body!

Exfoliating your skin weekly will help to remove any dirt and impurities your skin will build up.  Rosemary Body Polish buffs to reveal healthy new skin, while the invigorating oils moisturise and nourish to leave it delicately scented and smooth. Other top tips.

Try massaging your face cream or oil into your skin for 20-30 seconds. This helps improve the blood flow and let the ingredients sink into the skin for maximum benefit giving your skin a wonderful glow.

Staying hydrated is key. Your daily dose is essential for helping your skin stay fresh and bright, but we often don’t drink as much in the winter months due to the cold temperature. Try drinking hot drinks including a hot water with a slice of lemon or a delicious cup of herbal tea. We love Teapigs Liquorice and Peppermint tea as a plastic-free alternative. Their tea bags are made from corn starch and paper and break down naturally over a few weeks.

Whilst tempting on cold chilly days, try not to take too long hot showers as this can dry your skin out even more. Instead, stick to warm showers and if you have a bath try adding in a teaspoon of bath oil to help further moisturise your skin.

Be careful of what type of fabrics you wear. Synthetic materials can cause skin irritation and dryness. Organic cotton will get your skin to breathe more and won’t cause irritation.

Remember to moisturise your lip. Our Lip Nurse is specially formulated for dry, chapped lips and for those prone to cold sore. This deeply moisturising lip balm harnesses the antiviral properties of Lemon Balm to soothe, heal and improve circulation. With Beeswax to nourish and hold in essential moisture.
